Penny stock, micro cap, and nano cap were used to refer to specific sector of the securities market which are generally low-priced and issued by relatively small companies. A penny stock is usually a security that is valued at less than $5 and is traded outside major stock exchanges such as NYSE, NASDAQ, or AMEX. They are usually quoted over the counter (OTC) listing service such as Over the Counter Bulletin Board (OTCBB) or the Pink Sheet. Unlike major stock exchanges, penny stocks have minimal listing requirements. Moreover, penny stock trading on the pink sheets has little or no regulatory listing requirements. This goes to say that shareholders are not very well protected in penny stock trading system.
Prior the selling of a penny stock by broker dealer, the firm, as mandated by SEC rules, must first approve the customer for a business deal and receive from him an agreement to the transaction in black and white. The firm must then hand over a document to the customer recounting the risks of investing in penny stock trading. Likewise, the customer must be informed of the up to date market quotation, if any, for the penny stock and for the payment the broker and the firm will receive for the penny stock trading deal. Lastly, the firm must furnish monthly account statements presenting the market value of the stocks held in the customer’s account.
There is a safe way in engaging to penny stock trading; there is also a dangerous one. The best way is to gain gradual profits and not to throw it all on the block. Do not expect to get rich off in one penny stock trading. It could happen once, but the next would be more of a gamble. Remember, in penny stock trading, penny stocks go up and down faster than other types of stocks.
